Speaker and Presentation: History Revival | Chickens on Delmarva: 100 Years of Backyard Flocks, Farms, and Friends

Speakers: Joanne Guilfoil and Barbara Slavin

Joanne currently resides near Selbyville, Delaware, a one-time hub of the chicken industry decades ago. She came here by way of (New York and Maryland where she was raised) Jacksonville, NC, where her kids were stationed and Eastern KY, where she raised them.

She is a retired art educator/professor emeritus, and she still exhibits fine art and teaches painting at the Art League of Ocean City. Since moving to Delaware in 2014, she has written and published over 10 paperbacks on various locations and cultural/historical themes. See www.shorebooksllc.com. The chicken industry is the most recent set. She also has a group of "poultry portraits" on display at the Delaware State Fairgrounds Administration Building. She is starting another series of state fair show animals this fall.

She keeps a backyard flock, registered with the Dept. of Ag., and am is a member of the Historic Village in ocean View (Board member and past secretary), Delmarva Chicken Association, Delmarva Poultry Fanciers, and American Poultry Association. She has kept chickens since she was a little girl (in 5 states), with the exception of AK, where she lived and completed research for her PhD.
